Capt. Richard Conklin said that Antonio Robinson was shot at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at West Avenue and Baxter Street.

Antonio Robinson was a free safety for the Knights for several years ending in 2017, and a co-captain for the team.

His murder was the first in the city in 18 months.

Lt. Tom Barcello, who also confirmed Robinson's identity, said officers have been working around the clock in an effort to solve the crime quickly.

Stamford Mayor David Martin said it was "ironic that today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Yet almost daily we hear and read stories from around the county of shootings."

The mayor also said the homicide is a reminder that gun violence can happen anywhere.

“While our police department is one of the best in the nation, we must recognize the importance of a community-wide approach to public safety," Martin said.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to call 203-977-4420.
